Editors Letter

Dear Subscribers

Understanding who your competition is, is the first point of reference for any marketing plan. Particularly as I strongly believe that once you know who else is in the market place you can fully commit to supporting your brand by truly up-holding what you do and how you do it. Let’s use the example of you as an Executive Coach then that is exactly what you need to portray within all of your marketing efforts. This is a true part of credibility to what niche of coaching you offer and how best you can serve your clients. Thankfully coaching accreditation supports coaches to show clients the coaching code of loyalty to good ethics and standards. Read more about ‘Understanding The Competition’ in our main article this month.

School’s out and August is a time for many to take time out with their families, friends and for themselves, one of the core belief systems of coaches is the concept of practicing self care, so with that in mind I’ll take this opportunity to wish you all a well-appointed summer break and see you back here in September.

Meanwhile for those of you keen to keep up with your CPD I’d like to share news about the first ever, World Business and Executive Coach Summit (WBECS). Watch the video here;

Here at the IIC we believe in sharing our coaching skills both for personal growth and community spirit, so we are looking for volunteer members to spread the word. If you have a keen interest in accreditation, IT, policy, public relations, and writing then we’d like to hear from you, we have several strategic volunteer member openings across the globe to partner with the IIC in its endeavours to assist coaches to become professional accredited coaches and support their CPD growth with country and international events, conferences and Coach Cast opportunities. Contact the IIC Once again enjoy the summer break and for those down under, the snow...

Understanding The Competition

Knowing who else, which others are in the market place is extremely beneficial to you, especially if you intend to make a going concern of your business.

Furthermore, being aware of the hidden details of the market place you propose to work in and who your competitors are is subsequently essential. When you are familiar with this piece of information it becomes an automatic measurement to your overall coaching practice success.

At this moment first steps first, let’s take the time to discover who your target market is. Read on to learn how you can define and understand the competition.

You would have already thought about your coaching niche, so you are in no doubt of the area your clients will want to have coaching on – that’s the topic of coaching!

Next, knowing your niche and topic is the heart of your practice, in other words knowing who will flock to your door because they are convinced you are an expert in your field i.e. executive coaching, group coach facilitator, relationship coaching, life coach trainer; there are so many speciality areas available to attract different types of paying client. Just a note here, I sincerely trust you have not made the mistake as many novice coach trainees and new business owners make of falsely thinking you can coach ‘everyone’ and spend unnecessary time and energy on worrying about missing out on sales opportunities, when in reality prospective clients actually turn away from you as they are confused about your exact coaching service and are apprehensive that you are not sufficiently qualified to coach them on their particular problem anyway!

The Market Place

Your chosen market place demographic area houses your target audience and more than likely your competitors too and according to your actions you’ll either fail miserably or achieve success levels that can be amazing.

By understanding your strengths and those of your business you’ll rise above the competition easily – it’s all a matter of positioning your coaching practice correctly.

There are 5 steps in planning and operating your business. Here’s what you can do to get ahead of the competition:

Step 1 Have A Vision:

Right now take time out to get clear on your business vision and understand your overall goals. Once you can ‘see’ what you want and expect for your coaching practice you’ll move forward and be able to instigate the necessary legal procedures you need to take, such as entity structuring, handling strategic planning, your goals outlines and an analysis of your current client coaching portfolio.

Step 2 Opening Proposition:

This is the time to go over your initial coaching proposition, what you intend to offer your clients. Think about our niche, your topic and your talents and skills.

Step 3 Market Intelligence:

Regular review your market place and the competitors you find there. Keep abreast of what’s happening in respect of current trends and economic statistics.

The bottom line, there is no one route to commercial coaching success, you have to invest in market research – your future depends upon it.

Step 4 Implementation:

Implement what you’ve learned, this is the exciting step because now you get to see progress by putting into place with confidence all the right moves and can see that success is moving towards you!

Step 5 Ongoing Growth:

In this step you’ll need to determine who else needs to be in your team to meet your annual targets and adjust for each new financial year.

Your Questions Answered

Question - “How can I attract Corporate Clients to my coaching business? I’ve been practicing as a Corporate Coach for about a year but with this global economy budgets are being reduced and I cannot get new clients. What should I do?

Answer

Corporate Clients are hiring, it’s just that your mind-set is being bamboozled into thinking they don’t want to hire you and fear has set in causing procrastination.

What you need is a marketing system that will show prospective clients how your coaching techniques and strategies stand you out from the crowd and as a result will benefit them and their employees when they hire you, which supports your efforts to consistently fill your appointment book with paying clients.

Here’s A Quick Fix Formula

If you have a marketing plan get it out review it then make adjustments by following the strategy I’ve give you below.

Begin today by writing down typically how you get new clients. Include how you get past the ‘dragon on the door’ and what you do next until you get the new sale!

Get clear on your price-point and know exactly what value you are giving to justify the fee. When you know, be totally confident that you are worth the outlay.

Tip the scales in your favour by discovering the ‘sweet spot’ of your prospective client. Build your relationship marketing skills.

When you have the above written down deploy your favourite coaching model to drill down into what needs to be changed and how you can do it. This will be your route to the corporate market place which you can adjust as and when necessary.

Learning how to present, ask for the contract and close the deal are a natural component of your coaching business.

The Wonder Of Communication

There are lots of articles written on the importance of effective communication, how it can enhance or disrupt relationships and ways to understand the role perspective plays in it.

Coaching clients with strong limiting beliefs can help them understand that these can affect their perspective on the messages they receive and damage their interaction with others. Through coaching they are able to become more aware of how these can filter the communications they give and receive, thus enabling them to work on ensuring that misunderstandings are reduced.

One thing which works extremely well to overcome the role of negative perspectives in communication is to suggest they say to themselves ‘I wonder what prompted that response?’

By being curious about what has caused the response you got from your communication – whether it is verbal or written – automatically detaches your personal assessment of what you think the message means and gently focuses on what the situation might be from the other person’s point of view.

Being curious means there is no judgement on the other person but a desire to ensure that your message was clear and accurate. It gives you time to consider how that person’s situation, and perspective, might have contributed to the response that you received and gives you the opportunity to continue to build a harmonious relationship.

Questions that might follow on from this might be:

  • Could they be under extreme time pressures?

  • Could they possibly be experiencing challenges or stress in other areas of their lives?

  • Are they reluctant to make themselves vulnerable by being completely open?

  • Are they fearful of the response their communication might have?

  • How might this affect them?

  • Have they understood my message correctly?

  • Should I have given more information to put it into a better context?

Limiting beliefs, fear, anxiety and stress can all contribute in distorting the messages you are giving or receiving.

  • Firstly you need to consider whether your message was delivered in the most effective way – was your body language and tone of voice congruent with the words you were saying.

  • If the response was not what you expected, by considering some of the questions above you are able to consider the range of possibilities which might be driving that person’s response thus increasing mutual respect and understanding.

  • By focusing on the other person helps reduce the effect that your own personal perspective has on filtering how their message was received.

For example, in the workplace communication plays a big part in building effective working relationships. A good manager must never lose sight of how much an individual’s private life can affect their performance at work. If a response was abrupt or not constructive, by asking ‘I wonder what prompted that?’ opens up a variety of other areas to consider such as workplace challenges or stress, or the possibility that issues occurring in other areas of the employee’s life may need understanding and support.

We all receive communication through a variety of positive or negative perspectives, depending on the situation. When we do our best to suspend any negative influences on how we receive messages we are much more likely to communicate clearly.

How about spending the day considering all the communications you receive from the other person’s perspective.

Ask yourself, ‘I wonder, what has prompted that response?’

Online Communication to Attract More Clients

The online revolution is here to stay! If you want to achieve a successful and sustainable coaching practice, you need to embrace internet technology or you will get left behind.

But, embracing internet technology is more than just having a website and the occasional flirt with social media.

The 80/20 Divide

It is commonly reported that only 5% of coaches and consultants are earning 7 figure incomes while 95% are broke!

I think that this is probably an extreme generalisation, but I have no doubt that the 80/20 rule applies.

The difference is that the 20% who are excelling have set themselves apart from the rest. They have risen out of obscurity and above their competitors into the spotlight. They have used online communication to become ‘A Credible Authority’. Therefore, they attract clients to them, instead of having to chase them.

So how do you become a credible authority?

  1. You claim it!

  2. Through writing

  3. Through speaking

Claim The Status of Credible Authority

Quite simply, if you don’t set yourself up as a credible authority, no-one else is going to. The difference between those 20% doing really well and the 80% struggling is that they have the confidence to get out there and shout about what they do - and the 5% who are earning millions are putting themselves out there in a massive way.

Writing Online

Getting your work published is a brilliant way of establishing yourself as a credible authority. But the great news is that you don’t have to get published by a big publishing house – although, if you can, even better!

There are many ways of getting noticed online through writing.

  • Write a free report and offer it on your website

  • Get articles published in online newsletters such as E-Zine

  • Write a good-quality, regular blog

  • Write e-books and give them away for free or sell them on your website

  • Get your e-books published via Kindle

Speaking Online

A very popular way of establishing your credibility is through running a webinar or teleseminar. The added advantage of a webinar is that you can show slides, your desktop screen or video and it’s free for your listeners to join – however they are a little more complex to set up and you have to pay more to host them.

Videos

Use of video is a must! You can use videos to promote your programmes and you can communicate through the use of video e-mail messages.

So – what are you waiting for? Start today in taking action to establish yourself as a credible authority in your field.

IIC Member Benefit Spotlight: ICR

The International Coaching Register is for any individual who trades as a Coach, who help individuals and/or organisations for example, establish a work life balance, manage stress levels and build communication skills amongst many other specialist areas.

Everyone who has qualified as a Coach with a recognised Coach training company should now take the opportunity to register. This will dramatically cut down on any misrepresentation that goes on within the industry. Many people have websites and call themselves a Coach but have no actual qualifications. The register will stop these people and raise the profile of genuine Coaching and how it can transform people’s lives.

President of the IIC Gerard O’Donovan said “the register has been administered by the IIC for the benefit of the world of Coaching and Coaching clients.
