Positive Daily Action
Having a dream is not enough; it’s a natural
requirement of being a coach to have an entrepreneurial
spirit. I mean that with 100% conviction in my soul,
as wanting to help others change their lives, and working
on changing the outcome in yours is as I mean a pure
indication that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive
and well.
Every waking day, look for the greater good in your
life, and of those whom you care about and coach. You
don’t need to take a directive approach as far
as those others are concerned, only take care of your
attitude.

 Editors Letter Dear Subscribers
Thomas Edison, Bill Gates, James Caan, Sir Richard Branson,
Henry Ford, Coco Chanel, Anne Pawsat-Dressler, Oprah
Winfrey, myself included are just a few who live the
life of an entrepreneur. The European Commission defines
‘Entrepreneurship’ as; the mind set and process
(needed) to create and develop economic activity by blending
risk-taking, creativity and/or innovation with sound management,
within a new or an existing organisation. There are so many
individuals in the world who hold that very same entrepreneurial
spirit. Coaching lends itself to the format of entrepreneurship
and earning money for providing a life enhancing service.
I for one agree with that concept. How about you, do you
hold the same opinion as me that the craft of coaching people
to live a better life, to be more by taking consistent action
towards their dreams is a part of the entrepreneurial spirit.
Unnecessary hardship appears to be taking a hold across
the globe. In a report issued by the CCCS consumer credit
counselling service (the UK's leading debt advice charity,
free debt advice & solutions) the case for hardship
has been documented. The report claims that many families
will be struggling and could be pushed into further debt
in the coming months. This idea has been floating within
economic chambers for some time. On the other hand, in this
light it is not surprising that there are many academic
institutions who are ready and willing to capture the entrepreneurial
spirit of culture within its esteemed walls and offer additional
outreach activities to students who would like to engage
in an entrepreneurial journey to learn about the theory
of business and go through the experience of developing
a business case. Our theme this month is all about the spirit
of being an entrepreneur.
World News – Her Majesty Elizabeth, Queen of England
is visiting Eire, southern Ireland, this month.
Barack Obama will visit a week later.
Entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey retires after 25 years as the
queen of chat show hosting.
What will you be doing different this month?
Yours in Coaching, PaTrisha-Anne Todd, LCSi, AFC Newsletter Editor Back to Top
 Entrepreneurial Spirit
First off I wouldn’t say that the entrepreneurial
spirit is only about working for yourself to make lots
of money. Oh no, I’d say it’s more about having
an open mind with an attitude of care and a hunger for
knowledge as you go about your daily life as an employee
or self employed business owner. The most important point
I want to raise here is that we each need to be clear
in our mind that our contribution to the community even
further along to the world centre of population is that
we come from a place of truth and enjoyment as we go about
our daily routines. By that I mean we care what we do
and get pleasure from providing what we do best.
Making A Positive Impact with the 3 ‘P’ formula
Coaches who want to seriously succeed in their niche market
can make a positive impact with their clients by putting
into place a conscious system to; progress, protect and
populate their practice. Simply put this means coaching
with a client using results focused models that elicit
on-going and fast progress, also creating a document structure
of coaching forms and scripts from suspect, initial prospect
contact through to client acquisition and forwards onto
coaching maintenance programs, a protection structure
for both you and your clients safeguard and your business
growth i.e. to populate your practice.
The Entrepreneurial Difference Demonstrated
Life for many can result in what they term as failure,
even entrepreneurs suffer from a feeling of failure, in
actual fact it’s inevitable to have such feelings.
The only question I believe that needs to be asked here
is whether or not entrepreneurs can move fast enough to
not allow any negativity that pops up periodically into
their life? You know what I mean – when your core
experiences the feelings of hurt caused by others not
paying you enough attention or showing their disapproval
of what you do, especially if you don’t have a JOB
or a boss, or perhaps you’ve gone through losing
money from failed investments, or messed up in the relationships
area including going through separation and/or a divorce,
having health problems, loss through bereavement and so
on.
Compelling Lifestyle
Coaching is only part of what makes an entrepreneur. I’d
like to include the model of author, speaker and trainer
to the mix as a model for the journey to reach the top
of the pile.
There are many ‘proven step-by-step success systems’
claiming to show you how to become a top earner and transform
you into an elegant and competent entrepreneur. It is
my belief that anyone who has a profound ambition to succeed
and earn a 6 or 7 income figure is capable to be a competent
and rich entrepreneur, providing of course that they deploy
a team to assist them on their entrepreneurial travels.
In the first place it takes endurance to raise financial
levels with a concise, clear no distraction attitude,
in other words a focused mind-set filled to bursting with
PMA positive mental attitude to avoid and if necessary
to deal with any sabotaging thoughts that show up uninvited.
Oh, and remember the goal posts keep moving so be aware
that you’ll need an endless supply of courage, tenacity
and strength to keep going, the hard core inner strength
variety. Then when those components are in synergy with
each other dedicated management between self and the team
comes into play. In my estimation and many top income
earners whom I’ve discussed this topic with we all
agree that a very high level strength of character is
needed at all times to pull off a triumphant outcome.
Entrepreneurship is the backbone of coaching and as coaches
we can set an example to live our lives on purpose by
stretching the comfort zone, day by day and then we get
what we truly deserve.
Top Tip
Getting known within the coaching world takes time
and effort, this is true of any business.
To increase your business growth I’d highly recommend
you have a web site that displays clearly what services
and products you offer, including any live events you
present. Include also a link to your blog page which you
will need to keep updated on a much more regular basis.
Taking this expansion approach will build your reputation
in the industry which in turn could lead to the acquisition
of new clients, joint ventures and overall a healthy additional
business boost.
 Your Questions Answered
Question - “ Sometimes my thoughts
are all over the place that I just can’t concentrate
on what I need to do next to get more clients. I’m
really scared my clients will dry up and then I’ll
have to go back to working for a boss!”
Answer Having thoughts about where
you business is going is a good thing! What is not so
ideal is letting fear of failure, fear of an uncertain
future creep into your thoughts. Where is your coach/mentor
to help you out here, you do have one, don’t you?
If you are committed to developing your coaching business,
and I’m sure your are but, you haven’t quite
mastered the craft of planning and implementing your
route to market then this is what you need to do.
Forget about your thoughts, empty your head of negative
worry and read on; it’s not really that complex
to figure out how to build your business with a steady
stream of clients and a healthy sound of ‘cha
ching’. What you need to keep in mind is your
original reason WHY you wanted to begin coaching and
WHO your target market is. With these two factors you
can refer back to your Business Plan, to the section
on Marketing and Promotion, in there you will have already
set out your goals and the steps you need to take to
continue to draw in a steady stream of clients. So without
further ado, go re-visit your plan, update it and follow
through.
 Raising Credibility, Coaching Standards
As the IIC’s Head of Membership
my remit is to assist in providing the services that members
want and that will encourage new members to join. A crucial
aspect of this is in publicising the existence of services
and making it easy for members to use them.
For the IIC to be successful in giving good value in
terms of the services it provides, participation by
members is vital. My aim is to encourage interaction
and enable members to take full advantage of what is
on offer.
This month I am highlighting the role of the IIC in
raising credibility and standards among the coaching
profession.
International community
The IIC membership spans over 70 countries and negotiates
at national level in moving towards the creation of
a professional, self-regulated industry that is recognised
globally. It provides a structure for accountability
and standards and a platform for members to voice their
views about coaching as a profession.
This gives coaches an incredibly high level of credibility
when interacting with the non-coaching community, being
able to demonstrate pro-activity in voluntarily providing
accountability and high professional standards.
Standards and ethics
The IIC has a comprehensive ethical foundation which
embraces these core values as the basis for professional
standards;
- Integrity
- Honesty
- Transparency
- Excellence
- Care
- Professionalism
- Accountability
These cover the following areas of responsibility;
- Client Care
- Personal Professional conduct
- Professional Relationships
For full details of these three areas go to the website
at
http://internationalinstituteofcoaching.org/standards_and_ethics.php.
Being able to operate under the standards and ethics
as laid down by the IIC is a huge benefit to members
as it gives them credibility and instils a high level
of confidence in prospective clients.
Complaints Procedure
To reinforce this, the IIC has a comprehensive complaints
procedure (see the website at
http://internationalinstituteofcoaching.org/complaints_procedure.php)
designed to enable IIC members or a member of the public
to raise a grievance against an IIC member. It embodies
a process that takes the complaint through from notification
to enforceable outcome.
Its existence is a further demonstration that the IIC
is committed to upholding the highest standards for
the coaching profession and its members benefit accordingly.
 Who Are You …… Really?
How often do you behave completely authentically?
We all play different roles during a day or over the course
of our lives and we have a set of behaviours which we
have developed for the role we are playing at that particular
time.
These behaviours may be in line with our perception of
how we should act. They may be positive if we are in a
familiar situation or they may be negative if we are growing
and stretching our comfort zone. The way we act may be
in line with limiting beliefs we have about ourselves
when our inner gremlin sabotages our performance. Perhaps
we are afraid of being judged.
Whatever role we choose, are we being truly authentic?
Do these roles represent who we really are deep inside?
If we had the complete freedom to be exactly who we are
– what would we do, how would we behave?
Within the confidential coaching relationship an individual
is free to explore any thoughts or ideas without judgement.
Quite often, without realising it at the beginning, they
encounter a journey of self-discovery as their awareness
is raised to the driving forces behind their dreams and
aspirations. They understand what is holding them back
and work on dealing with these issues in order to grow
and develop, and achieve their goals.
Before commencing any coaching programme it is extremely
useful to use recognised coaching techniques to identify
an individuals core values. This creates a foundation
against which all action steps are measured to ensure
that they are congruent with their core values and therefore
do not create stress. It also enables them to understand
what drives their choices and behaviours.
So how do we understand who we really are?
Emotions are an excellent indicator to whether we are
acting in line with our values. What is our ‘gut
instinct’ telling us? Are we in balance or is there
a nagging voice which we are overriding? Do we feel at
ease? If not, is it anxiety as a result of doing something
new or because we’re not at ease with our behaviour.
Literally, does the situation ‘feel right’?
Of course we are all human and infallible. We make mistakes
from which we learn. However, when we are behaving in
complete alignment – we are really living. Some
call it being in flow. When this happens we are powerful,
invincible, excited, passionate, contributing, supportive,
and completely burden free.
Brian Tracy states in The Psychology of Achievement, that
there are 7 key questions to ask when considering goal
setting:
- What are the five things you value most in life?
- In 30 seconds or less write down the 3 most important
goals in your life right now.
- What would you do if you won £1million in the
lottery tomorrow?
- What would you do and how would you spend your time
if you learned today you only had six months to live?
- What have you always wanted to do but been afraid to
attempt?
- In looking back over all the things you have done in
your life what type of activities, in what sort of circumstances,
gives you your greatest feeling of importance/mental wellbeing/self-worth?
- Imagine you received one wish from a genie –
you could achieve any goal or realise any wish –
what one great thing would you dare to dream if you knew
you could not fail?
These questions give you the freedom to identify and
understand truly your priorities and purpose without
any restrictions or limitations placed on you. Having
clearly identified these, work can then begin to set
specific goals in all the areas you have chosen that
are important to you.
"It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but
in ourselves."
- William Shakespeare

IIC Member Benefit Spotlight: ICR The International Coaching Register is for any individual who trades as a Coach, who help individuals and/or organisations for example, establish a work life balance, manage stress levels and build communication skills amongst many other specialist areas. Everyone who has qualified as a Coach with a recognised Coach training company should now take the opportunity to register.
