Editors Letter

Dear Subscribers

I can’t believe we are fast approaching the end of 2010 it’s as scary as the feast of Halloween.

How have you been feeling lately? Perhaps not your usual full of beans self, rising each morning ready to face the day and change the world. Maybe you’re feeling a little SAD. Season Affective Disorder.

SAD affects many of us without realising we are suffering from the disorder. In the UK stats say 7% of the population is affected. I’m not going to dwell on the symptoms of SAD nor debate the percentage stats of sufferers in countries around the world, but rather move swiftly on to wishing all of us a fabulous end of year season and a dynamic rise in business and remind us that the festive season will be upon us any day now with an abundance of Christmas gift ideas, foodstuffs and goodies galore to purchase. However, what about those who ‘have not’? My research has shown that every country treasury does have systems in place to support a crisis, and that’s ok, for some. Sometimes though, those systems are in shambles and frankly do not work. Perhaps the solution is for each of us is to take on the responsibility ourselves to support in some way those who ‘have not’. A first step is to choose a charity to support, sign up to it and support the cause independently.

Next month and into 2011 I will be sharing with you some wonderfully inspiring news that is relevant to the season of goodwill to all mankind and peace on earth and our wonderful coaching profession.

Yours in Coaching,

Conscious Awareness Principles for Success

Understanding your purpose in life and how you will go about turning your day dreams into goals and attaining them can be for some a life time drama. Others manage to raise their conscious awareness and release the life purpose in a harmonious and fruitful way.

Gaining the appropriate skills and knowledge for personal development requires intelligent access to your inner core thus enabling you to master your destiny.

A heightened approach to what you think about and the actions you actually carry out gives you a new tier to aspire higher. The method of conscious awareness will automatically create an inter core sure way to achieve a dependable balance of success with less risk of failure and disaster without having to juggle inner and outer emotions with little to smile about.

Foundation is the most powerful and important part of this series. With conscious awareness foundation you will confidently move yourself forward, by breaking the mould of all previous excuses to not progress, take back control of your thinking, create your destiny and master your life. When you adopt the empowering mindset of a conscious awareness thinker your life will change. Everything about you at all levels will change; ideas, your resources, your self esteem, your level of control and discipline. You’ll grow sufficiently to draw upon and accelerate your inner powers of success to beyond and further still.

Psychology and your upbringing has conditioned you to think the way you do. That’s ok. However, in order for you to progress further from where you are now to where you want to be you’ll need to re-condition your thought patterns...

Top Tip - Networking

Networking – how many times have you fooled yourself that you are working your business?

Attending a networking meeting, luncheon, evening even an all day event in the guise of a workshop or seminar will not benefit you if you do not stick to genuine networking and not treat this time out from your office as a ‘jolly’. Time is money and money is time that includes networking investments, make sure you get a return on your investment. Choose your networking activities wisely.

Burning Desire vs. Negative Emotion - continuing the topic from the October issue

It’s a wonderful feeling to arrive at success, and celebrate the rewards it brings you.

You‘ll know when success appears because you’ll be engulfed in your purpose, and the fire of focus will burn throughout your whole being. You’ll be totally on fire and living on purpose, you’ll know without any doubt whatsoever where you are headed.

I’m quite sure I know why success happens. Throughout the many years of working as a life coach and business development coach with clients from all different backgrounds and goals in mind I’ve seen firsthand that it’s a combination of having an idea and being out in the field working the idea, i.e. life coaching – working with clients to achieve more and create their desired outcomes, plus, the power of one’s own energy, in other words, personal application.

Action Creates A Shift

Excitement is part of the whole process of the burning desire concept. We all know that any venture worth doing takes planning and discipline; with copious amounts of discipline for long term victory. Being excited is not enough to gain the win. A burning desire requires the acquisition of staying power to follow through and a great deal of common sense to apply the right measure of tactic for ongoing gain as the results flow in.

To me planning and discipline are the fundamental nature of building a remarkable business in coaching, indeed any type of service or product business. Of course though there is within the regime of discipline the subdivision of ‘drive’. Anybody considering taking on a commercial venture must not only have that human burning desire to go forth and overcome the obstacles that will pop up along the way but the drive to take action.

Negative Emotion

Looking forward and moving forward happen when positive energy flows through the veins of the one aiming for a better and bigger outcome. Emotion pops into the mix now and then playing out both positive emotions and negative ones. That initial compelling idea to work as your own boss and really go out there in the world of commerce and make that burning desire come alive can become diluted and for as many as 90% of business owners completely burnt out. Obviously burning desire has to be sparked with enthusiasm to play a bigger game and get bigger results – emotions, particularly negative emotions have to be culled and buried. Yet on the other hand, if like me you can see a wider picture you’ll see that a negative emotion needn’t take the wind out of your sails but it can be flipped on its head and turned into a positive opportunity to gain more knowledge, expertise and growth. True value can be experienced when we choose to play a bigger game and get bigger results.

Spoonfuls of Courage

The word ‘change’ can be one of the most threatening words a client can hear and often the actual acknowledgement that an individual desires change takes courage. Even if the client is committed to improving an area of their lives in order to achieve that change their current situation will certainly alter. This involves changing the current status quo which can affect how you perceive yourself, how others close to you perceive you and your role in their lives, and building resources and confidence to risk negative reactions from others in order to venture into unknown territory and achieve your goal. This is when an individual consciously needs to make a choice – work on their chosen goal to improve that area or stay in their current situation.

So the word ‘change’ can have many negative implications. However, consider what Felice Leonardo “Leo” Buscaglia (31 March 1924 – 12 June 1998), American author and motivational speaker said:

"Change. It has the power to uplift, to heal, to stimulate, surprise, open new doors, bring fresh experience and create excitement in life. Certainly it is worth the risk."

What they might not consider is that change does not have to be one big step. It need only be very small steps, perhaps a telephone call, a heightened self-awareness, an empowering choice, one spoonful of courage at a time. What is important is that each step is built on by another, and another, and another so that over time significant progress is made - small spoonfuls of courage each time.

When a client understands this completely, the burden and fear is lightened and any barriers that may have deterred them from working towards their chosen goal can be gently broken down.

Developing this understanding and awareness with the support of a coach is of massive benefit. Employing a professional coach enables an individual to have the support of someone solely focused on enabling them to achieve the goal they set themselves, without any outside agenda. A coach will help an individual take the steps which, by themselves, they might avoid, in order to stretch them and grow as individuals. A coach will champion them, ask the right questions to raise their awareness and maintain their motivation to keep on their journey. The environment of the relationship is safe and confidential which is immensely freeing. Clients are able to discuss anything they feel necessary and be completely honest about their fears, dreams and challenges knowing that they will not be judged in any way.

Understanding, that if they choose small spoonfuls of courage every day, the idea of change becomes more acceptable than perhaps their previous thoughts of one huge spade full in one go. This way change comes when the individual is ready relieving unnecessary stress and ensuring the success they desire.

IIC Member Benefit Spotlight: ICR

The International Coaching Register is for any individual who trades as a Coach, who help individuals and/or organisations for example, establish a work life balance, manage stress levels and build communication skills amongst many other specialist areas.

Everyone who has qualified as a Coach with a recognised Coach training company should now take the opportunity to register. This will dramatically cut down on any misrepresentation that goes on within the industry. Many people have websites and call themselves a Coach but have no actual qualifications. The register will stop these people and raise the profile of genuine Coaching and how it can transform people’s lives.

President of the IIC Gerard O’Donovan said “the register has been administered by the IIC for the benefit of the world of Coaching and Coaching clients. It is also a great way for Coaches to get business as members of the public can search for registered Coaches in their area. It brings Coaching transparency at last.”

A Day in the Life of Barbara J. Dalpra

I arrived in the office this morning and a friend of mine who runs the wonderful coffee shop next door walked in to say ‘bom dia’.  As he left  he said ‘welcome to the real world’, and it struck me as I was sitting down at my computer, that when we sit down at our computers we don’t always have the right level of information to make the most of what we are working with or how to get the most out of it.

As I am now working with Windows 7 I’ve been reading articles about how to make the most of my computer and I recently read an article headed ‘6 useful Windows tricks’ and some of the points made in this article are really useful, so I’m taking this opportunity to share some of these with you.  Before I carry on I’ll apologise to those who don’t use Windows (as I do) as this article may or may not provide them with useful hints and tips.

Windows Explorer
When you go into Windows Explorer you’ll find that it is presented in a specific manner.  This is the way that the programme thought you would like to see it, but the good news is that you can change the look and feel of this to suit yourself and the way that you want to work with your computer.

Customise your Navigation pane

When you first open Windows Explorer it will generally display two columns.  The left hand column will be a list of access opportunities like Favourites or Desktop or System Tasks, whereas the right hand column generally gives you access into the data from the option selected in the left hand column.  The way I look at this is like the old fashioned filing cabinet.  In my mind the left hand column is the filing cabinet and the right hand column are the draws of the filing cabinet.  Using an example of this, as a volunteer with the IIC I have a folder called ‘IIC’ – so to me that is my IIC filing cabinet.  The items held within this folder/filing cabinet are the draws.  The really fabulous thing about my computer is that I have a large number of filing cabinets.

So getting back to setting your computer up to suit you.  When you first open Windows Explorer you’ll see the two columns.

Let’s first customise the number of columns and the information you want to see:

  1. At the top of the screen under the toolbar you will see a button called ‘Organize’.  Clicking this button gives you a menu option which includes ‘layout’ and ‘folder and search options’.

  2. The menu option we want to select first is the ‘layout’ option – so select this.  Selecting the ‘layout’ option gives you a sub-menu of ‘menu bar’, ‘details pane’, ‘preview pane’, ‘navigation pane’ and ‘library pane’ .

    • Menu bar – this is the bar at the top of the screen that shows us the ‘File’, ‘Edit’, ‘View’, ‘Tools’ and ‘Help’ bar.  When you select the ‘layout’ option you will find that this sub-menu option will be ticked.  Un-ticking it removes the menu bar.  Not a problem as you can come back into this sub-menu and tick it again and the menu bar returns.

    • Details pane – on Windows 7 this is one of the most useful things I have found.  The details pain shows you a summary of your drive or folder.  (OK so what is the difference between a drive and a folder?  A drive is recognised by a letter i.e. all computers have a C-drive.  A folder is a classification of data within the drive i.e. IIC, Madeira, Nyasa.)  The sort of detail you will find displayed in relation to a drive will include how many folders you have on the drive.  The soft of detail you will find displayed in relation to a folder will include whether the folder is shared with another computer, who it is shared with (everyone or someone specific), and the date the data in this folder was last changed (modified).  Selecting to highlight a document within a folder will display a lot more information about the selected document and may include the author, the date it was modified (created or updated), the size.  Again to select to show this information you need to make sure that the ‘details pane’ on the sub-menu is ticked.

    • Preview pane – does just what ‘it says on the tin’.  If you select a document  - for example a word document – by ticking the preview pane option on the sub-menu your computer will show you the first page of the document.

    • Navigation pane – this is what I would normally call the left hand column.  If this option is not ticked on the sub-menu then the left hand column on Windows Explorer will not display.

    • Library pane – something new in Windows 7.  This just displays which library you are in at the top of the right hand column – useful or not.  I’ll leave you to decide.

  3. Now let’s go back to the ‘Organize’ button and on its menu select ‘folder and search options’.  Selecting this will display a new window with a number of tabs along the top.

    • General tab allows you to select how many open windows you will have when you are working with Windows Explorer.

      • Open each folder in the same window or Open each folder in its own window.

      • Single click to open an item or Double-click to open an item.

      • Navigation pane

        • Show all folders?

        • Automatically expand the current folder.

    • View tab allows you to select how you want your folders and files to be displayed.

    • Search tab allows you to select how you want to search your computer for folders and files.

It is important to remember that for each one of these options the decision you take at the time is changeable.  If you find when you are working with a specific decision you have taken and this is not working for you – just  go back and change it.

Favourites

The great thing about Favourites is that is just a short-cut to your documents.  For me I work with a specific client every week and the work I do for them I always do on a Friday.  To make it easier for me to find the files I need on a Friday I created a Favourite in the folder I need – in my terminology in the right filing cabinet draw.  How did I do this?  It’s really very simple.  If you click on the folder that you want to use regularly (sadly you can’t do this with documents) you just ‘drag’ it into the Favourites folder at the top of Windows Explorer.

To work with the Favourites folder, just select the word ‘Favourites’ in Windows Explorer and right click on your mouse.  This will bring up a sub-menu of options.  You will only need these if you want to restore system defaults, or re-organise your favourites .

Two useful tips:

  • If you want to rename your Favourites link so that you truly know what it will link you to – select the link and right click.  You will then see the option to ‘rename’.  Select this and type in the new name for this link.

  • If you want to delete a Favourites link, select the link that you want to delete and right click.  You will then see the option to ‘remove’.  Select this and your favourite link will be deleted.  Please note this does not delete the folders or files – it only deletes the link in the Favourites folder
