One should not pursue that which is not necessary in one's life, otherwise one will have to pay a price. One who knows how to preserve happiness will not burden himself unnecessarily.

We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearth-stone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.

Goals

Sometimes when we set a series of goals for ourselves, it may appear that achieving them is so very far off in the distant future. However, let us never lose sight of the FACT, that the longest journey starts with the first step.

Editor's Comment:

 Martin Mitchell

How many times do you analyse what drives you?

Research has shown that there are two basic driving forces that make us do things. The first is DESIRE, because we know what we want, we actively set out to achieve our goals.  The second is AVOIDANCE, because we don't want to suffer the consequences of not doing something.

Sadly, most of us, through watching and learning from others in society have learned to live by the second.

When making decisions, it is important to consider the consequences of not doing something.   However, if we find that our driving force is avoiding pain, then it may be time to have a rethink.

This would also make a good tip of the month - stop right now if you have time and think about why you do the things that you do.  Is it because you want to, or because you have to?  Exploring which tactic serves you best could ensure you live a happier life!

June's Newsletter takes another look at the ongoing subject of Goals and Goal Setting - the foundations of the Coaching process.

The ECI continually strives to improve standards, raise awareness and seek recognition for Coaching as a profession before we have to react to any 'knee-jerk' reactions from Brussels.  That's why it is vital that we all take responsibility for encouraging others to support The ECI by joining.

Please remember to forward this newsletter to everyone that you think may be interested.  We thank you for your continued support.

We welcome the return of Dawn Campbell who will step into the role of Editor, a warm welcome back and good luck.

From next month we are introducing a letters page for you to voice your opinion on anything at all - as long as it's coaching related.  Get writing and don't forget to keep sending us your questions, quotes, case studies, articles, tips, feedback and queries, acronym's etc. to newsletters@the-eci.org.

Coaching Research

The ECI's Research and Development team are researching the impact of cultures and language world-wide in coaching.  We are looking for people to become involved in this research who are coaching in a language that is not their first language and/or those who are coaching an individual or team in a culture that is not their own and/or those who are coaching by telephone across countries or are travelling to those countries to provide coaching.  For those interested in participating in the team, participating in the research, or receiving the results of the research please contact Barbara J. Dalpra using deputy-ceo@the-eci.org.

Coaching Resources required

The ECI is looking for coaches to put forward to an
organisation across Europe.

The enquirer is looking for coaches to work with their support centres in London and Geneva to coach customer service agents in customer service skills in a wide range of European languages.

They are looking for coaches who are also NLP qualified and are fluent (i.e. native level) in English and one of the following - French, German, Swiss German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, all 3 scandinavian languages, Finnish, Dutch, Greek.

Requirement will be to take an English coaching programme and apply cultural nuances to help staff support customers in other European languages.

These opportunities do arise regularly with The ECI, but we can only put forward those coaches who are members - accredited and in some cases like this associate members.

Accreditation Process

For those coaches who have trained on an accredited training course, please remember that there is a simplified process for achieving your accreditation.  For further details please contact either your training organistation or Barbara J. Dalpra deputy-ceo@the-eci.org for the relevant form.

In a society that is becoming more litigious every day, Accreditation is rapidly being recognised as the way forward for coaching.

Publicity Opportunity
Goal Setting is boring

In a recent interview, the interviewer asked for something new about goal setting.  Specifically, she felt that everything to be said about goal setting has been said.

As we talked, it occurred to me that there are timeless truths to goal setting that lead to goal achievement. We discussed several ideas that may be discoveries for you to ponder on as you consider the points that were made.

Goal setting takes on additional excitement when goals are considered with the heart as well as the head. Our passion for a goal comes from deeply held beliefs. Our passion for a goal is often linked to a dream and not entirely rational or guaranteed. Our passion, not our intellect, is often the key driver for commitment and the willingness to go the extra mile with an acceptance for the costs.

Clients often begin viewing goal setting as dull and laborious when they lose control of the process thus allowing the process to control them. To avoid  this happening, agree on a process for goal achievement (recognizing there are several).  Then keep the process moving, remembering that you are in control of the process rather than the other way around. Recognize that the real excitement is in the activity of goal achievement, not in the process of goal setting.

It's interesting that those who have little goals tend to be people who view themselves as small in some way. Perhaps it's a lack of confidence, a lack of skill, or a sense that they don't deserve to achieve. Whatever the reason, true and lasting power emerges from trusting oneself and others, and from acknowledging one's knowledge and skills to achieve worthy goals.

A few days ago, sixty employees met over a period of three days to contribute to their company's strategic planning process. As discussion over goals and priorities emerged, I was taken by the number of people who held a perspective of "can't". "We can't do this" or "we can't change that" or "the president probably will be mad about this goal" were just a few of the comments that signalled small thinking. Sad. Those who chose to take the initiative to speak up, those who chose a "we can" perspective, and those who chose to participate fully were members of a group that set big goals, goals that generated excitement.

Finally, ensure that you are the architect of your goals. If someone else is setting your goals- your boss, your spouse, a past ghost! - then the goals are not yours. And it's no wonder that you have little passion for them. Here are a few thoughtful questions to consider as you decide what is important to you. Who are you? What is your purpose in life? What is your vision for your life? How is what you are doing today matching what is most important to you? Responding to these questions thoughtfully prepares you for the creation and ownership of goals that are most important to you.

Goal setting is boring? Not if you choose to boldly and authentically set the goals that are life-changing for you. It is your power at work.

Your Questions Answered
Dreams and Goals that are not written down
are just Wishes

Men are dreaming animals, and the incapacity to dream makes a man less than human
.  Irving Kristol

Dreams play an important role in life.  They provide a vision of the future to inspire, motivate and even plan. “A person with great dreams can achieve great things”.

Isn’t this obvious? Well, on the one hand it is. Many of the greatest people in this world have expressed having a strong vision of what they wanted to achieve and stuck to the task of achieving it. This implies that if you don’t dare to dream, you probably won’t achieve great things.

The world we are seeing today wasn’t created over night but it was a dream of some one. Each thing that we see, feel and touch today, be it a light bulb, fire, Television, Cell Phones, nuclear bombs etc, we dreamt of somewhere by someone.  From these dreams being realized, we are all now reaping the benefits.  So, if that is the power of dreams, then why are we so afraid of dreaming? Maybe it’s because we are not strong enough to face the failures that precede success.

Dreams are what cause us to bound out of bed in the morning instead of waking with anxiety or, even worse, apathy for the day ahead. When I don't have a dream in front of me it's easy to find fault with everything and self-pity comes easily. I've always enjoyed the quote from Walt Disney who said, "If you don't have a dream, how are you going to have a dream come true?"

I want to assure you that you are the very best at what you do - that’s being you.  Therefore, you deserve the best the world has to offer, don’t you? How then do you achieve your dreams?  Here is what you must do:

1.      Have goals. If you don’t know where you are going, you will never be able to take that first step. Your future is what you want it to be. Be like a kid, be creative and DARE to dream. Write down everything that comes out of your mind.

2.      Decide who you are today and who do you want to be in X number of years time. Having a time frame is important.

3.      Once a goal is decided and a time limit is committed to, write down your plan detailing how you are going to choose your path to success.

4.      Read out your goals at least twice daily, right after you wake up and before you go to sleep.

5.      Visualise your goals clearly.  Hear the sounds you’ll hear when you succeed.  Feel and act ‘as if’ you've already achieved your dreams.

6.      Review your goals each week and amend what needs improvement.

7.      Become a powerful person by building hope into your life and share it with others. Doors open for these people.

8.      When you know for certain that you are about to realize your Dream set new goals or dreams. If you stop improving, you won't grow.  Except for our parents, you have the ability to choose each and everything else in our life.  So choose the type of life you want to live?

You were born to win.  In order to be the winner you were born to be, you've got to plan and prepare to win. Then, and only then, can you expect to win. Winning is not an accident, it happens as a result of a deliberate plan.

Those who have the courage to dream and those who are strong enough to work hard and face failures rewrite history and others only read history.

Have a dream. It’s your purpose for living.  Only you will change your world.

Where Goal Setting Can Go Wrong

Goal setting can go wrong for a number of reasons:

  • Outcome goals can be set instead of performance goals. Where you are using outcome goals, and you fail to achieve the goal for reasons outside your control, this can be very dispiriting and can lead to loss of enthusiasm and feelings of failure. Always set performance goals.
  • Goals can be set unrealistically high. When a goal is perceived to be unreachable, no effort will be made to achieve it. Set realistic goals.
  • Conversely goals can be set so low that you feel no challenge or benefit in achieving the goal. Setting goals has been a waste of time. Always set goals that are challenging.
  • Goals can be so vague that they are useless: it is difficult to know whether vague goals have been achieved. If achievement cannot be measured, then your self-confidence will not benefit from goal setting, nor can you observe progress towards a greater goal. Set precise, quantitative goals.
  • Goal setting can be unsystematic, sporadic and disorganised. Here goals will be forgotten, achievement of goals will not be measured and feedback will not occur into new goals. The major benefits of goal setting have been lost. Be organised and regular in the way that you use goal setting.
  • Too many goals may be set, leading to a feeling of overload. Remember that you deserve time to relax and enjoy being human.
Where goal setting does go wrong, not only are the benefits of goal setting lost, but the whole process of goal setting can fall into disrepute.

The 'Quantum Leap' Approach
One approach to goal setting for yourself and other people is the 'Quantum Leap' approach. This tries to force intense activity by setting a goal that will need a 'quantum leap' in activity to achieve it. This is a dangerous technique that should be used with care - it is very easy for the whole process of goal-setting to fall into disrepute where quantum leap goals are not met. Similarly if you are really not convinced that a goal is attainable, you will not put effort into achieving it. Managers using this approach should take care that they are not 'shot down' by someone firmly requesting information on how a quantum leap goal should be achieved.
